Well, I'll Be a Monkey's Uncle!

On Friday, I got one of the best birthday presents I have ever received - news that I am going to be an uncle! My sister and husband have been trying to adopt for a while and on Friday they brought home little 11-month Aaron. Since he was born in New England, I have every confidence he'll be a BoSox fan. Like every good New Englander, I wish the boy health, happiness, and the hope he'll get to see them win another World Series title in his lifetime.

Now I have to face the responsibility of making sure the little legend grows up with an appreciation of comics. And I'll also have to make sure all my expensive collector's items are out of reach whenever he visits!

You Should See the Other Guy!

I haven't dressed up for Halloween in maybe a decade, but since it was encouraged at my day job I decided to give it a go.

My first plan was to dress up as a World Champion and wear my Red Sox cap and jersey, but I have been sporting that outfit a lot during the post season. So I decided to pay tribute to Patrice Bergeron. Hope to see you back on the ice soon #37!!!

Not an elaborate costume to be sure, but I am in fact wearing some make-up! "Hey honey, do you mind if I use some of your eye shadow?" is a phrase I never thought I'd say. I was not trying for authenticity, but I did a good enough job to fool the owner of my local comic shop, who thought I'd been a bad accident!

Thanks to Mistress Koloth for taking the pic!

Top of the Stack - Justice League of America #14

The momentary pause in the drama that is the BoSox postseason allowed me time to catch up on some reading. The was some good stuff in the pile as well including Captain America, Fables, The Spirit, Brave & the Bold as well as this week's Countdown. However, the issue that I grabbed first was Justice League of America #14!

I know there was some concern among DC fanboys when best-selling author Brad Meltzer left the book, but I was confident that Dwayne McDuffie would do the title justice (pun intended). His work as a writer/producer of the animated Justice League Unlimited series left little doubt that the man knows the subject matter. However, even I am surprised at what a blast this title is now!

McDuffie has brought the same energy and playfulness to this title as he did to his animated series work. It really feels as if he is a ten-year-old playing in his room with his action figures. The return of the Injustice League? It looks like he's not going to leave any figures in the toybox! I enjoyed Meltzer's run, but it wasn't until now that I realized how serious it was...too much so at times. What we have so far with this arc is not a complete opposite, but more of a balance.

Ed Benes and Sandra Hope provide the great art for this fun ride. There's still time to hop on - just go to your LCS and pick up the JLA Wedding Special, along with Justice League of America #13 & 14. The next chapter is expected in stores the week of Thanksgiving. My thanks go to DC for putting McDuffie on this title!

Cowboys & Indians

Calling all members of Red Sox Nation, it's time once again to "Cowboy Up!"

The BoSox face the Cleveland Indians in this year's ALCS and it looks to be a humdinger of a tussle! The Tribe neatly disposed of the "Evil Empire" last week and they are definitely NOT to be underestimated. However, I do feel confident that we will prevail. Today in preparation for the series, the BoSox organization unveiled new away uniforms...

All humor aside, let's also have a moment of silence for my beloved Cubbies.

They ran into the chainsaw that is the Diamondbacks last week. I must admit, I had very limited exposure to the D-backs this past season, but they sure impressed the heck outta me! They are scary good!

This should also be a great series and if the Rockies stay hot, it could be the beginnings of a baseball rivalry for the ages.

Too bad it's on so late!

Top of the Stack - Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8 #7

This week's Top of the Stack award goes to Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8 #7 "No Future for You" written by Brian K. Vaughan with pencils by local artist Georges Jeanty. I know some Buffy fans were worried with a writer not named "Joss Whedon" on this book, but Vaughan proves he's more than capable with the second part of this arc. It doesn't hurt that Faith is one of my favorite characters (possibly of all-time), and I can clearly hear Eliza Dushku's voice as I'm reading. The same can be said of all the characters really, but I personally enjoy a little Dushku in my ear (where has she been???). Speaking of girls named Eliza, the homages to Pygmalion/My Fair Lady are a nice touch! Though the some of the scenes and characters seem familiar, I am still finding the overall story unpredictable. And of course, the issue is covered by another magnificent piece by Jo Chen, though it is the first cover of the series that does not incorporate the title into the art itself.

It Happened One Night

As a die hard fan of both the BoSox and the Cubbies, I've often been accused of being a masochist, but tonight makes it seem all worthwhile...

Should be a fun October!

JORA! JORA! JORA!

In my first post, I mentioned that some exciting things are happening and probably the one I am most jazzed about is my comic! The upcoming release of the anthology "Tales of Legend" will feature two short stories by me and they will be my first published comic work. I've been working with Atlantis Studios to provide the art, and so far I have been very impressed with what I've seen! Take a look at a couple of character designs for Jora, a tribal warrior featured in one of my tales. So far, so good!

The pencils are by the very talented Paul Bonanno. I know it sounds cliché, but it really feels overwhelming to see characters you've written come to life! I can't wait to show off more!

Howdy!

Once again, I arrive unfashionably late to the party. I'll probably overstay my welcome as well. Until that time, I hope you'll find something of interest among my upcoming announcements, opinions, stories, rants, raves, and everything else that compactly fits the term "blogs". This is such an exciting time for me and I can't wait to share it with y'all. It will be a pleasant distraction from lots of things I should be doing. Keep watching this space!
