Hogan's Alley - FCBD 2010

Can't make it to a local comic shop on Saturday, May 1st? No worries, you can still get free stuff!

Why so glum, chum? We're here to deliver a glimmer of cheer! Mark your calendars for this Saturday, May 1: Free Comic Book Day. Send us an e-mail ON THAT DATE with your mailing address, and we’ll send you a FREE issue of Hogan’s Alley! No obligations, no strings attached; the only thing it will cost you is several hours as you enjoy the issue. (This offer is valid for all U.S. residents, whether you’re a current subscriber or not.) Remember the one condition—we must receive your e-mail request (sent to hoganmag@gmail.com) on Free Comic Book Day (May 1), not the day before or the day after. (Before and after that date, any requests for freebies will receive only scorn and derision.)

Free stuff is always cool, but cool free stuff is even cooler! If you have not yet had a chance to read this labor of love magazine, this is the perfect time to try it out. If you like comics, you'll be glad you did!

2010 Summer Movie Box Office Challenge

Do you think you know what movies will be the biggest hits this summer? If so, then you'll want to enter our annual Summer Movie Box Office Challenge at the Legend Lounge forum!

We've been doing this for years, but for those who don't already know, it works like this: just let us know your picks for the top five films released from May through August in terms of box office success (aka highest gross). The prize? A gift pack containing a DVD of your choice and bragging rights!

We are happy to take on all comers! To enter, just click on the graphic above to register to the Legend Lounge message board. Post your picks in the thread before Monday, May 3rd at midnight EST, then sit back and enjoy the summer movie season. We'll announce the winner in September. Feel free to contact me with any questions. Best of luck!

Quotes of Legend - Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman: "You know you've been in the Midwest too long when the idea of somebody deep-frying cheese curds is not strange."

This Saturday, participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away select comic books absolutely FREE to anyone who comes into their stores. Check with your local shop for their participation and rules. For more details on the books that will be available and local stores in your area, click the logo at the top of this post. Some freebies to look for include:

I'll be visiting various LCSs in the area on Saturday, and I look forward to visiting with folks while I make my rounds. But if I do not see you Saturday, I hope to see local comic fans at the Atlanta Comic Convention this Sunday, May 2nd. Admission to the con is FREE! The fine folks behind the new Knoxville Comic and Anime Con are generously sponsoring the show this Sunday. PLUS each attendee gets a FREE PASS to the Knoxville show while they last!

FREE COMICS + FREE COMIC CONVENTION = GREAT WEEKEND!

Quotes of Legend - The 11th Doctor

The Doctor: "Didn't anyone ever tell you there's one thing you never put in a trap if you're smart? If you value your continued existence? If you have any plans about seeing tomorrow, there's one thing you never ever put in a trap."

Weeping Angel: "And what would that be, sir?"

The Doctor: "Me."

It didn't take long for Matt Smith to win me over. Long live The Doctor!

Quotes of Legend - U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens

Raylan Givens: "I figure people are entitled to their hobbies, and I'm entitled to think those people are creepy."

Props to the entire cast and crew of Justified. It has quickly become one of my favorites shows.

Happy Anniversary Legend Lounge!

Today marks the seven year anniversary of the Legend Lounge, formerly known as The Buzz Chamber. Although it has not seen much action lately, I wanted to acknowledge that it has not been forgotten!

With all of the social networking sites out there, it has been difficult to determine what role this forum should have in our plans moving forward, but rest assured it has not been abandoned.

In fact, one event that will definitely continue this year is the annual Summer Movie Box Office Challenge! There will be a formal thread posted this weekend, and I'll be sending out the word to all members to come together once again in friendly competition. Hopefully, it'll renew some interest and possibly even spark some new discussions!

My thanks to all who are still lounging around and anyone out there is welcome to join us!
