Quotes of Legend - George Lucas

George Lucas sent this congratulatory letter to the producers of Lost: "Congratulations on pulling off an amazing show. Don't tell anyone ... but when 'Star Wars' first came out, I didn't know where it was going either. The trick is to pretend you've planned the whole thing out in advance. Throw in some father issues and references to other stories -- let's call them homages -- and you've got a series."

Quotes of Legend - Woody Allen

74-year-old Woody Allen on getting older: "I find it a lousy deal. You don't get smarter, you don't get wiser, you don't get more mellow, you don't get more kindly. Nothing really happens. Your back hurts more, you get more indigestion, your eyesight isn't as good, you need a hearing aid. It's a bad business getting older, and I would advise you not to do it."

Quotes of Legend - Happy Mother's Day!

After watching her grandson Dallas Braden pitch a perfect game on Mother's Day, Peggy Lindsey had these words for the New York Yankee third baseman who publicly criticized the Oakland A's pitcher last week:
"Stick it, A-Rod."

Quotes of Legend - Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman: "You know you've been in the Midwest too long when the idea of somebody deep-frying cheese curds is not strange."

Quotes of Legend - The 11th Doctor

The Doctor: "Didn't anyone ever tell you there's one thing you never put in a trap if you're smart? If you value your continued existence? If you have any plans about seeing tomorrow, there's one thing you never ever put in a trap."

Weeping Angel: "And what would that be, sir?"

The Doctor: "Me."

It didn't take long for Matt Smith to win me over. Long live The Doctor!

Quotes of Legend - U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens

Raylan Givens: "I figure people are entitled to their hobbies, and I'm entitled to think those people are creepy."

Props to the entire cast and crew of Justified. It has quickly become one of my favorites shows.

Quotes of Legend - Stephen Wacker

I am pleased to report that I'm feeling much better now! And I felt more than fine picking up my weekly stash of comics today. Especially when I saw the cover for Amazing Spider-Man #577 and I remembered the "next issue promo blurb" from last week's book written by the current editor of the Spidey books...

Simperin' Steve: "Next Week! Punisher and Spidey?!? (What is this? 1995? Where's Wolverine?)"

Quotes of Legend - Barack Obama

U.S. President-Elect Barack Obama: "If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer. It’s been a long time coming. But tonight, because of what we did on this date, in this election, change has come to America.”

Despite the opinions of the mainstream media, my support of Obama has nothing to do with the color of his skin, nor was I motivated by "white man's guilt." Throughout his life, Obama has been a social worker, volunteer, instructor, and counsellor. Many of his opponents have mocked him for his lack of "executive" experience, but they failed to understand the power of a community organizer. He managed to inspire and motivate millions of Americans (including me) during his campaign and I have no doubt he will likewise use the same methods to help this country in these desperate times.

Tonight I am prouder to be an American than I have ever been, and I look forward to the days ahead.

Quotes of Legend - Nadaa Haidar

USA Today reports that heavy metal has returned to Iraq. Over 250 young headbangers gathered at a private dinner club in Baghdad for the first heavy metal concert in five years.

Sometimes it takes a village. Sometimes it takes a miracle. Sometimes all it takes is an 18-year old Iraqi girl to remind us of what we all too often take for granted.

Nadaa Haidar: "There's nothing wrong with wearing a veil and listening to metal."

Rock on Nadaa!

Quotes of Legend - Detective Ray Carling

Ray: "Eventually, I will burn you down. And I will bag your ashes, and I will bury your ashes in my yard where my big dog craps big crap."

Michael Imperioli is one of the main reasons to tune in to the US version of Life on Mars.

Quotes of Legend - Wonder Woman

Amidst all the nastiness these days between Democrats and Republicans, men and women, blacks and whites, Star Wars fans and Trekkies, and Red Sox Nation and everyone else, Wonder Woman #25 arrived in stores this week and this particular panel caught my eye. The quote is even more pertinent if you remove the specifics...

Wonder Woman: "Why is it that people feel that a belief in one thing equals a hatred of something else?"

You're a wonder, Wonder Woman!

Credit to writer Gail Simone and artist Bernard Chang.

Kevin Garnett to Bill Russell after winning the NBA Championship: "I got my own. I hope we made you proud."

Played with conviction. Celebrated with class. Sure made me proud!

Quotes of Legend - Stephen Colbert

Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert recently spoke to Princeton University graduates-to-be assembled at Class Day, which is held each year the day before commencement. His message was simple and inspiring...

Stephen Colbert: "You can change the world. Please don't do that, OK? Some of us like the way things are going now."

Check out more words of wisdom from Colbert's speech at The Daily Princetonian.

Quotes of Legend - Clint Eastwood

This past Saturday, Clint Eastwood turned 78 and he's just a tough as ever!

A couple of weeks ago, Spike Lee was at the Cannes Film Festival trying to get some press for Miracle At St Anna, his World War II drama about the all-black 92nd Buffalo Division and he called out some Hollywood filmmakers, particularly Eastwood.

Spike Lee: "He did two films about Iwo Jima back to back and there was not one black soldier in both of those films. Many veterans, African-Americans, who survived that war are upset at Clint Eastwood. In his vision of Iwo Jima, Negro soldiers did not exist. Simple as that. I have a different version...If you reporters had any balls you'd ask him why. There's no way I know why he did that -- that was his vision, not mine. But I know it was pointed out to him and that he could have changed it. It's not like he didn't know."

The statements are not so much a critique on Eastwood's work, but a ridiculous accusation that he is racist. Not sure Morgan Freeman, Isaiah Washington, Dennis Haysbert, Mario Van Peebles, or Forest Whitaker would agree - all of whom have had great roles in Eastwood flicks. Lee's mentions that Eastwood did two movies about Iwo Jima, but neglects to mention one of them was from perspective of the Japanese, which had never been done before by an American director. But instead of praising him for his efforts he gets slammed.

Eastwood was at Cannes as well, promoting his new effort Changeling starring Angelina Jolie, but refused to respond to Lee's remarks until days later when in an interview with Focus magazine.

Clint Eastwood: "Does he know anything about American history? The U.S. military was segregated til the Korean War, and the blacks in World War Two were totally segregated. The only black battalion on Iwo Jima was a small munitions supply unit that came to the beach. The story was about the men who raised the flag and we can't make them black if they were not there. So tell him: Why don't you go back and study your history and stop mouthing off!"

The above quote is even more stirring if you imagine it in Eastwood's voice. The only thing missing is the word "punk" at the end!

Quotes of Legend - Senator Barack Obama

Last week, the three main presidential candidates appeared on WWE's Raw via video and all of them attempted to use some wrestling lingo into their promos. But only one IMHO was successful...

Senator Obama: "I've got one question - do you smell what Barack is cookin?"

Since he appeared on RAW, Sen. Obama has had a tough week. Without a shadow of a doubt, it's time for the real People's Champion to tell the competition to "know their roles and shut their mouths" before he layeth the smackdown!

Quotes of Legend - Model Six

The first entry - in what I hope will be a ongoing feature - is from this week's episode of Battlestar Galactica. There is trouble brewing among the different models of Cylons. The matter is put to a vote, which does not go in the Model Six's favor. She decides a little election reform is in order with the help of a couple Cylon Centurians.

Model One: "Centurions can't vote, Six."

Model Six: "Oh, they're not here to vote."

The Centurions then proceed to do what Centurians do best. Please spare a brief moment of silence for the death of Cylon democracy.
