This week's Countdown to Halloween Rave goes to The Simpsons. This year, the opening of the Treehouse of Horror XXIV designed by director Guillermo del Toro was one of the best ever! The developers of The Simpsons: Tapped Out game have also been doing a spook-tacular job with haunting my virtual Springfield. If you haven't already downloaded this app, now's the perfect time! And feel free to add me to your Origin friend list. My username is newlegendmike.

And my Shout Out goes out to a local artist who honored Russ Stamm, Jr and myself with a painted version of the cover to Invisible Scarlet O'Neil #1. Trevor Hawkins presented it to me at Dragon Con and I was blown away!

Next week, the ESO crew continues the Countdown to Halloween with a look at one of my favorite series of all time, The X-Files. Plus, the usual assortment of Rants & Raves, Khan Report, interviews, The Geek Seat, Shout Outs, and so much more!

ESO wants to hear from you! Drop us a line at www.esopodcast.com, the ESO Facebook Group, email us at esopodcast@gmail.com, or call us at 404-963-9057 with your comments. We just might air your comments on the show!

Cover Rave - Famous Funnies #81

Amidst the chaos comes a comic! Things are busy here in the New Legend offices as we are preparing for the San Diego Comic Con (we'll be in Small Press table L-14), but I had to pause for a moment when a comic I recently purchased on eBay arrived in the mail. I was introduced to the character of Russell Stamm's Invisible Scarlet O'Neil six years ago and she has become a very important character in my life. I have been searching for a decent copy of her first appearance in comics and finally pulled the trigger. Famous Funnies #81 marks the debut of the newspaper reprints starting with Scarlet's origin. Dated April 1941, it is an important and historical issue and now the oldest in my collection. Perhaps even more than that, it features an absolutely gorgeous cover by H.G. Peter, who would go on to illustrate Wonder Woman. As I complete the final proofs for the new Invisible Scarlet O'Neil graphic novel, it is fitting to take a moment to remember where she came from. It is my hope that her re-introduction is as exciting as her comic debut 71 years ago. In a few days, I'll be posting the cover to the new graphic novel and you can judge for yourselves.

Boston, Here I Come!

The April con tour comes to a close for me this weekend, and I can't think of a better place to be than at the Boston Comic Con! To be honest, I'm still recovering from C2E2, but I would not want to miss this show in my ol' home state! You can find me at Artist Alley table #505. I'm sad to say that I will not have the Invisible Scarlet O'Neil graphic novel (which is very nearly complete), but I will have copies of Tiki Zombie #1 as well as the Crypto Zo preview special. Plus, a few other surprises! Looking forward to a wicked good time!!!

This Weekend - C2E2

The New Legend World Tour continues! This weekend we'll be at C2E2 in Chicago, IL. Come by our booth and say, "Howdy!" and we'll make sure you leave with something special!

Khan Report - Metropolis Super Con

Last weekend, I had a SUPER time at the Metropolis Super Con! I appreciate all the fans who attended, especially the ones who showed Tiki Zombie and Invisible Scarlet O'Neil some love! It was very cool hanging out with fellow guests Bobby Nash, Stephen Zimmer, Sean Dulaney, John Wesley Shipp, Patricia Albrecht, and the folks from The Show podcast (many of whom I met for the first time). Thanks also to Marc Ballard for organizing the con and Myra for her Magic Hot Dogs!

Due to unforseen circumstances, we were only able to be at the show on Saturday, but we did find time to visit the Giant Superman Statue and the Superman Store and Museum during our stay. I've posted some pictures online and you can hear more about the show on ESO #102. If you've never been to the "Official Home of Superman," I strongly recommend it. In fact, I hope to return in June for the Superman Celebration!

Next up, Charlotte Comicon!!!

This convention is really a celebration of comics and this year's guest list is amazing - too many great talents to list here! Beantown is home to friends and family, so I expect a very good time. Hope to see you there!

Comics Coast to Coast Episode #129

I met Brian Dunaway at Dragon*Con and he was nice enough to invite me to be on an episode of the Comics Coast to Coast podcast. It was a blast chatting with Brian and his co-hosts Joel Duggan and Matthew Ducharme! All three are talented creators and they served me some interesting questions that were about craft as much as they were about fun.

It was a TIKI-RIFFIC time and I suggest everyone check out their show, and not just the one featuring me!

Boston, Here I Come!

While much of the world is watching the Royal Wedding, I will be returning to my home state of Massachusetts to attend my first-ever Boston Comic Con! I am very excited for the show and meeting fans and fellow creators! As usual, I will have plenty of copies of the Tiki Zombie Special Edition and The Untold Origins of Invisible Scarlet O'Neil at my table in Artist Alley. I will also be recording segments for the ESO podcast.

And as a special treat, I'll be bringing posters of the four main characters of Tiki Zombie available for the first time ever!

The four individual 11" x 17" prints featuring artwork by Peter Cutler and colors by Kathryn Parker will be on sale for a mere $5 each. In addition to the single character posters, I'll also have a never-before-seen group shot of all four characters for the same low price. Buy all five posters for the discounted price of $20! Each sale also includes a free issue of the Tiki Zombie Special Edition signed by myself and artist Peter Cutler.

So come on by my table and say, "Howdy!" I look forward to meeting y'all and thank you so much for the support!

As many of you are already aware, I also post at the Official Invisible Scarlet O'Neil Blog. So starting today, check out the Scarlet blog each week for some "Scary Scarlet Comic Strips"!

HeroesCon Sketches

Hard for me to believe that HeroesCon was three weeks ago! I just got around to scanning my sketches this week and they are sweet! I got more this year than at any other con I've been to and I didn't even spend a lot to get them. Hope y'all enjoy them as much as I do!

Dian Belmont - Guy Davis
Guy is kind enough to draw free head sketches all weekend. Last year, I was excited to have a Wesley Dodds Sandman by Davis added to my sketchbook and now Wes is joined by his love, Dian Belmont.

Doctor Who & Martha Jones - Kelly Yates
Kelly was handed a double-edge sword filling in for Pia Guerra in the Doctor Who: The Forgotten mini-series, but his work more than holds its own IMHO. Be sure to check out his creator-owned Amber Atoms series too.

Black Beetle by Francesco Francavilla
What can I say about the amazing style of FF that I haven't already said before? He's got a new project - Black Beetle. This sketch was added to the back of my copy of the preview issue which is quite the teaser. I want more!!!

Frank by Dave Wachter
Dave included individual sketches on the back covers of the preview edition of The Guns of Shadow Valley, which was another teaser that left me wanting more. All for a mere $2! IMHO, the best deal of the show!

Kit Fisto by Chad Cicconi
I think it is obvious that Chad knows that Kit Fisto Rules! Chad was in Charlotte with PKD Media and it was great chatting with all the guys in the booth. See more of his work on his online art journal.

Kit Fisto by Dustin Nguyen
I am a big fan of Dustin's work and picked up a print of his watercolor Bat-family poster. He's also done one for Marvel characters and based on the Kit Fisto head sketch he graced me with, I hope he does a Star Wars themed group pic sometime. That would be sweeeeet!

Scarlet O'Neil by Michelle Poust
I'm always looking for alternate takes on this classic character, and Michelle gave her a great modern makeover! See more of her work at HAC-Studios at deviantART.

FCBD 2009 Comics and Sketches

A good time was had by all...at least at the comic shop I was today. There was a very good turnout today at Galactic Quest, and with good reason. First, there were the FREE comics. I picked up 10 issues that caught my eye and have already read through a few. Overall, the quality was pretty good - these aren't just reprints or preview pages of upcoming issues. Kudos to the publishers for giving us some original material. Marvel's Avengers comic was fun and the art was gorgeous! My only beef was that the book itself was a smaller size than a regular comic. Shame on them for shrinking Cheung's stunning pages! DC's Blackest Night prelude did the job - I'm eager to read this summer event! The Savage Dragon story was ol' fashioned comic goodness. And The Stuff of Legend has an intriguing premise and fanciful artwork, so I'll be adding the first of two issues to this month's order for sure. Kudos to Kyle for stocking a large variety of books today. Many independent publishers participate in the FCBD event and it was nice to see them represented on the rack along with the majors.

There were also some talented comic book folks at the store today, and I got a couple of sketches from two guys as nice as they are talented (which is to say a lot). Bobby Nash, whose main role is usually that of writer, added the following to my sketchbook celebrating the release of the Domino Lady: Sex as a Weapon anthology.

Writer, penciller, and inker extraordinaire Nathan Massengill was also in attendance. I've wanted a Scarlet sketch from him ever since we first discussed the character at the ACE convention last year, so today was the perfect opportunity. Nathan did not disappoint. I think it is quite apparent he had fun with it!

Many thanks to the folks at Galactic Quest for hosting a fun event. Today had everything that a comic fanboy like me could want - free comics (that were actually quite good), fine conversation with other fanboys and girls, talented folks showing off their work, and two welcome additions to my sketchbook. Oh, and I also saw some more pages from my artist for my latest project. I can't wait to share 'em! This might have been the best FCBD I have ever attended, which is saying a lot since all the while I was in some physical pain from having my wisdom teeth removed recently. Can't wait to do it again next year - hopefully pain-free!

Merry Christmas!

Have a safe and joyful holiday!

'Tis the season for giving, so I present to y'all a special gift - the SCARLET CHRISTMAS GALLERY! I've posted holiday images from the classic Invisible Scarlet O'Neil strips as well as some exclusive family Christmas card art created by Russell Stamm on Scarlet's MySpace page. Most of these images have not been seen in OVER 50 YEARS! Enjoy!

All the Critics Loved Us in New York

This could possibly be the last report on this year's New York Comic Con to be posted on the blogsphere, but I only just recovered from my trip this past weekend. For some reason, I suffered from massive fatigue for quite a few days after I returned, but I'm pleased to say that I'm feeling much better now and ready for the next con (which will be next month)!

Despite all the drama leading up to the show, this year's NYCC was a fantastic time! I was there first and foremost to promote The Untold Origins of Invisible Scarlet O'Neil and I was very happy that I sold a fair number of books and gave away all my promo cards. I also spoke with a number of folks who stopped by and couldn't take their eyes off the cover image of Russell Stamm's signature character! Many fanboys love to challenge the idea that Scarlet is the first leading lady with superpowers to appear in comic form, so it makes for some interesting discussions. I'm just so glad to see the character getting attention and there is some great news to come!

However, I was not alone in the booth! Bill was there are well - his first time in the Big Apple! He was excited all weekend, but it was hard to tell if it was the city or the great work he has been doing on the new NLP project. We're just weeks from a formal announcement, so be sure to stay tuned!

Others in the booth included a couple of "old friends" - Kathy Messick who is still hard at work promoting Cyber Angels. A great concept and I am amazed that some company hasn't signed her to develop it as a series yet. Also in attendance was Scott Ham of Buckeye Comics, creator of Blood Sentence. Scott's got some great ideas for other horror titles and I'm looking forward to his next project which takes place in the Old West and WWII.

This year we also had a newbie in the booth, Terrance Bernard who was there to introduce the world to Sophia: Awakening and 8-part comic series that takes place in the distant future. The preview book and promo cards and posters did attract quite a lot of attention, thanks in no small part to the gorgeous artwork by Andres Guinaldo! I strongly recommend checking out a preview of the first issue at Parasite Publishing.

But the con was not all work (if you can call hanging out with all the talented folks mentioned above "work"). I also took time to walk around Artist Alley and met some great talent, including Rafeal Navarro who contributed this lovely image of Scarlet for my collection:

Start Spreading the News!

I've made it to New York City! There was a bit of drama involved, but that's the norm in the Big Apple! I'm appearing at the New York Comic Con at the Jacob K. Javits Center in Midtown Manhattan April 18-20. I'll be in Booth #2360 representing Russ Stamm's Invisible Scarlet O'Neil and well as some upcoming New Legend projects. Feel free to stop by and say "Howdy!" and if you want to buy a book, that's cool too...
