My first convention guest appearance of 2012 will be at the Metropolis Supercon, March 10 & 11. I had a blast last year at this show and it looks to be even better this year. Once again, I will be accompanied by the great talent that is Bobby Nash. We'll be selling books and other merchandise and will even record some segments for the Earth Station One podcast. I definitely recommend seeking out the actual book to read some great tales by such masters as Walter Brooks, Robert Arthur, H.G. Wells, Robert Louis Stevenson and others. Here are some of the eerie illustrations by Fred Banbury.

Not only is this made-for-tv movie appropriate for Halloween, but next week we will be reviewing Spielberg's career for an upcoming episode of the Earth Station One podcast. I'm sure another master movie maker would approve of my "killing two birds with one stone." The movie stars Kolchak/The Old Man himself, Darren McGavin.

Countdown to Halloween - Monster Mike's Mini Marathon Movie #4

Every year's selection of classic movies includes a Hammer film and this Halloween, I decided on Dracula: Prince of Darkness (1966). It is the next in the series starring Christopher Lee in the title role. I'm not one for spoilers, but I do happen to know that Dracula has no dialog in the entire film. When asked about his silence in the picture, Lee said, "The reason was very simple. I read the script and saw the dialogue! I said to Hammer, if you think I’m going to say any of these lines, you’re very much mistaken." Here's hoping the rest of the movie is better than the lines would have been! If you would like to find out as well, TCM has it scheduled for Halloween day.

Countdown to Halloween - Monster Mike's Mini Marathon Movie #3

There are a number of actors who personify the "classic horror" movie - Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, Lon Chaney, Peter Lorre, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee - to name but a few. But IMHO, none exemplify more than Bela Lugosi. Perhaps it is because he was the star of one of the first Universal monster movies. Perhaps, unlike many of those other names, he did very little outside the genre to distance himself. It has been argued that Lugosi was not as talented as many of his collegues, but I've been told that his performance in The Human Monster (1939) is one of his best outside of Count Dracula. I am eager to find out!

Dragon*Con's only a week away!

One of the biggest events of the year for me and 40,000 of my closest friends is only a week away! We have spent a lot of time this month interviewing folks about the 25th anniversary of Dragon*Con for the ESO podcast and it has me super excited to be a part of it!

I am still unsure of my panel schedule, but most of the time you'll find me at Table #37 at the Grand Hall East of the Hyatt Regency. I have just ordered more copies of Tiki Zombie #1 and will be debuting a FAN-TIKI-TASTIC new poster print at the con! We also will have preview copies of Crypto Zo, a New Legend project written by William Michael Kielhorn with art by Heidi Arnhold!

This year's Dragon*Con looks to be the best EVER (and that is saying a lot)! If you are going to the show, please stop by and say "Howdy!"

Cover Rave - Captain America #405

This comic cover is appropriate to current events because last weekend I saw Captain America: The First Avenger (and liked it a lot as you can hear on this week's ESO podcast), and I purchased the entire "Man and Wolf" story arc last time I was at the Charlotte ComiCon, where I will be this weekend. The show is a great place to find super deals on trades and back issues! Case in point, This storyline is a fun adventure written by long-time Cap writer Mark Gruenwald guest starring many other Marvel characters. The idea of "Capwolf" skirts the line between cool and silly, but this cover wins me over. And I got it for far less than the price listed on said cover!

We all lost a truly great artist this week with the passing of Jeffrey Catherine Jones. I hope this documentary is able to be completed.

Boston, Here I Come!

While much of the world is watching the Royal Wedding, I will be returning to my home state of Massachusetts to attend my first-ever Boston Comic Con! I am very excited for the show and meeting fans and fellow creators! As usual, I will have plenty of copies of the Tiki Zombie Special Edition and The Untold Origins of Invisible Scarlet O'Neil at my table in Artist Alley. I will also be recording segments for the ESO podcast.

And as a special treat, I'll be bringing posters of the four main characters of Tiki Zombie available for the first time ever!

Elisabeth Sladen 1948 - 2011

It was quite a shock today to learn of the passing of actress Elisabeth Sladen at the all-too-young age of 63. Like many Doctor Who fanboys of the 70's and 80's, she caught my attention as journalist Sarah Jane Smith. I am not at all ashamed to admit that while I lusted after Louise Jameson as Leela, I fell in love with Sarah Jane. And when she appeared with the tenth Doctor in 2006, I fell in love with her all over again. I've heard many say that she was just as nice a person as her character and I regret that I was not able to thank her personally for the years of entertainment. To say she will be missed is a huge understatement. I'm very pleased that we will be recording a tribute to her on next week's ESO podcast. I am eager to watch her adventures again.

Fandomfest Metropolis Supercon 2011

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of being a guest at the Fandomfest Metropolis Supercon held in Metropolis, IL. IMHO one of the best places to hold a convention. I had visited the "Official Home of DC's Superman" a few years ago and enjoyed the stature and Super Museum, and the place has just gotten better! They now have a beautiful bronze statue celebrating the "First Lady of Metropolis," Noel Neill and an Americana Museum, which will overwhelm you with over 200,000 items of memorabilia. I visited Harrah's Casino and placed my first bet ever which I won. I was not so lucky on my subsequent bets! The convention itself was a small but fun event. I met some cool people, found some cheap back issues, and sold some books! Thank Mark, Ken, and the Fandomfest folks, the city of Metropolis, and my good friend Bobby Nash for a "super" weekend! I hope to return sometime, perhaps for the Superman Celebration!
